In this penultimate episode, BIGA explores a debate that seems to be at the cross-roads of many of the issues that the UK faces: whether to build, or conserve. Our guest today has spent his career in “Prac-Academics” making sure that his research could be put to good use but Councillors and MPs alike. With over 40 peer reviewed articles and more than £2 million pounds in grants secured for his research, Professor Alister Scott shares his expertise on how nature can be mainstreamed in policy and development.
Our conversation starts by asking the big questions: is a human-centered approach to green politics really the best way of shaping policy? As part of this, we talk about Professor Scott’s role in the Dasgupta Review (2021) and the hidden influence of neoliberalism in our policy discussions.
From here, we talk about the challenges of creating an operational framework for development that still takes our natural word into consideration and the ‘pandora’s box’ of planning reform.
The discussion ended with some final motivational words from Professor Scott: get involved, and give it a shot at joining a Council – the future we aim to develop is ours.
