Podcast #5 – Peter Jones, CMG

Author’s Note: This marks the end of our first podcast series as we’ve explored diplomacy in the 21st century and how the UK can navigate the challenges and opportunities unfolding in the world around us. It’s been really exciting for us to start this project and we hope you’ve enjoyed it as much as we have!

Diplomacy, as a profession, aims for consensus. The military, by contrast, aims for compulsion. Two methodological antagonists that are aimed towards the same goal: national interest.

My guest today brings with him more than thirty years of diplomatic experience and discusses the overlap between diplomacy and security. Having been present at the Conventional Arms Control Negotiations as well as the Conference on Security and Cooperation in Europe, former Director-General of the British Foreign Office – Peter Jones – walks us through the twisting corridors of Rome, Vienna, and Ghana.

Our conversation explores the practice of diplomacy in the 21st century, the insights required to achieve sustainable security, and ultimately, how Britain can navigate the turbulent waters between ‘interests’ and ‘values’.
