Welcome to the first episode on BIGA’s exclusive series on the Youth G20! Each year, the country that hosts the G20 is also expected to host different engagement groups such as the Women20, Business20, ThinkTank20, and others. BIGA’s founder, Alastair Nicol, was selected as one of the UK Youth Delegates to the G20 and in this premier episode, he talks with his fellow UK Delegates about their experience.
The delegation starts by exploring the build-up to the Y20 Summit in Washington DC – the expectations for the role, the focus groups that were undertaken, the start of negotiations – and how each of them approached their position.
This then leads into the negotiations themselves. The Y20 hosted five distinct tracks: 1) Energy; 2) Economy and Job Creation; 3) Global Health and Food Security; 4) Innovation and Digital Transformation; and finally 5) Fragility, Conflict and Violence. The delegates explored which tracks had the more contentious discussions and what came of their conversations.
Finally, they reflected on what they had learned from the process as well as a rallying cry for fellow young people trying to understand how to shape events before events shape them.
